Offshore VPS vs mainstream cloud

Where the hyperscalers genuinely win, where they genuinely lose, and which workloads belong on which. Includes the rows where AWS beats us outright.

7 criteria favour NimbusVPS5 favour mainstream cloud1 tie

The hyperscalers are extraordinary pieces of engineering and they beat us decisively on several axes. This page says which ones. If your workload needs managed Kubernetes, a global CDN and forty regions, you should be on AWS and we would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong thing.

Where they lose is narrower and, for a certain kind of customer, decisive: identity requirements, price predictability, egress billing, and the fact that account suspension is an automated decision you cannot appeal to a human.

Choose NimbusVPS if…

  • You want a predictable monthly bill with no metered surprises
  • Egress volume is significant and per-gigabyte pricing would dominate your costs
  • You cannot or will not provide identity documents and a payment card
  • Jurisdiction matters to your workload
  • You are comfortable running your own database, queue and cache

Choose mainstream cloud if…

  • You need managed Kubernetes, managed databases or managed ML
  • You need SOC 2 or HIPAA attestation for your own customers
  • Your traffic is spiky and genuinely benefits from autoscaling
  • You need presence in dozens of regions simultaneously
  • Your team already has deep expertise in one of their ecosystems

We would rather you buy the right thing elsewhere than the wrong thing here. A refund request in week two costs us more than a sale we never made.

Questions

Is an offshore VPS cheaper than AWS?

For a fixed always-on workload, substantially. A 4 GB RAM instance with 90 GB of SSD and 6 TB of transfer costs $8.90 per month here. The nearest equivalent on a hyperscaler, once storage and egress are included, typically lands between $30 and $60 per month. The gap widens as egress grows, because we do not bill for it at all. For bursty workloads that are idle most of the time, per-second billing can make the hyperscaler cheaper.

Can I run production workloads on an offshore VPS?

Yes, and most of our customers do. The relevant question is not offshore versus cloud but managed versus unmanaged: you will run your own database, your own backups and your own monitoring. If your team can do that — and most teams that have ever run a Linux server can — a VPS is production-grade infrastructure. Our SLA commits to 99.9% availability with automatic service credits.

What do I actually lose by not using a hyperscaler?

Managed services, elasticity and compliance attestations. You will run PostgreSQL rather than clicking RDS, resize manually rather than autoscaling, and you will not be able to hand a customer a SOC 2 report that names your infrastructure provider. For a great many workloads none of those matter. For some they are decisive, and this page exists so you can tell which you are.
