VPS hosting in Iceland

Iceland writes source protection into statute rather than leaving it to practice, and it makes a removal duty wait for a court. Paired with a fully renewable grid, this is our site for journalism and archives.

Legal posture

Regulation (EU) 2022/2065 is EU law and Iceland is not an EU Member State, so the Digital Services Act is not the instrument that decides what happens to a complaint about a server in Reykjavík; EEA membership does not carry an EU regulation across on its own. Two Icelandic statutes carry the weight instead: the Media Act No. 38/2011, which puts protection of sources on a statutory footing, and Act No. 30/2002, which ties a host's duty to take anything down to a court injunction — so a demand from abroad has to be turned into an Icelandic court's order before it does anything here. One correction if the Modern Media Initiative is what brought you here: the protection described above comes from the two Acts named, not from the 2010 initiative. Not everything that initiative called for reached the statute book, so ask which Act your protection actually sits in before you rely on it.

Iceland VPS FAQ

How much does a VPS in Iceland cost?

A Reykjavík VPS starts at $3.48 per month for 1 vCPU, 1 GB RAM, 25 GB NVMe and 2 TB of transfer. The Standard configuration — 3 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 90 GB NVMe — is $10.68 per month. Iceland carries a price index of ×1.20 against our Amsterdam baseline, reflecting real differences in transit and facility cost.

A law firm acting for a company named in your archive emails us about your Reykjavík server. What happens?

Most people arrive holding one of two pictures: either we quietly comply, or we make some kind of stand. It is neither.

That letter is an instrument of United States law, and Iceland is not the United States, so nothing local turns it into an order. We date it, we file it, we send you a copy, and your server carries on. No suspension, no removal, no null-route, and no request that you justify yourself to us.

What would change the outcome is an injunction from an Icelandic court, which is what Act No. 30/2002 ties our removal duty to. That route stays open and we honour it. It simply costs them counsel in Reykjavík rather than a mail merge, which is the whole of what you are buying.

Two things it does not buy. Copyright exists in Iceland exactly as it does anywhere else, so this is a statement about who has to prove what, not about what is permitted. And our acceptable use policy runs here as it runs everywhere; nothing on it is a copyright question.

Do I need ID to buy a VPS in Iceland?

No. NimbusVPS applies the same policy in every location: no identity document, no phone number, no proof of address and no payment card. An email address and a cryptocurrency payment are all that is required, and Iceland imposes no additional customer-identification obligation on hosting providers.

What is the latency to Reykjavík?

Typical round-trip times from London 21 ms, Amsterdam 27 ms, New York 46 ms, Frankfurt 32 ms. The site runs on a 20 Gbps uplink at Advania Thor, a Tier III facility. The address printed in the latency panel above is a documentation example, not something you can ping yet; the panel says so and explains when the live target goes up.

What data retention law applies in Iceland?

Iceland stayed outside the EU retention directive, but it does keep a duty of its own under the Electronic Communications Act No. 70/2022, and that duty is addressed to the companies carrying the traffic rather than to the company renting you a machine. We are not going to argue its exact reach in a marketing paragraph, because the answer that protects you does not turn on it: there are no access logs here to hand over, at this site or any other. Independently of local law, NimbusVPS operates 0-day access log retention — logs are not kept — and holds no identity data to retain in the first place.
